The group of Research Assistants

Who we are
The faculty’s Research Assistants (in German often termed "Mittelbau“) represent one of the status groups provided for in the Higher Education Act (German “Hochschulgesetz”, HG) which includes academic staff according to the HG, i.e. also doctoral researchers and academic (senior) councilors. Unfortunately, only full-time employees with at least a half-time position are eligible to vote or to stand for election.

Many research assistants belong to the so-called early career researchers. The faculty offers information and support for young scientists at various career stages (in German only).

What we do
As a status group of the academic self-administration stipulated by the HG, we provide voting members for important committees and boards that set courses for the faculty’s structure & development and for teaching & research (some committees are listed here). Thereby we can actively contribute our views and help shaping our teaching and research environment.

How we organize ourselves

Meetings of the Research Assistants
In our meetings, which usually take place shortly before the Faculty Council meetings, we discuss current developments. Thereby, we prepare ourselves for committee meetings, especially for the Faculty Council, which decides on all important matters of the faculty. Furthermore, we elect members for boards and committees when indicated.

Timely announcements
e.g. about dates and the agenda of our meetings can be received via the BIOLOGIE-WMA mailing list.
You can subscribe yourself (https://lists.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/mailman/listinfo/biologie-wma) or send an e-mail to PD Dr. Anja Hemschemeier (E-Mail) or Dr. Wolfgang Kruse (E-Mail), the current representatives of the Research Assistants in the Faculty Council.
